Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge particular rulings from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
