A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
