Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in March.
