Jailhouse Surprise: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He battled justice and justice triumphed.

Sixty days after being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally appears headed to prison.

Imminent Imprisonment

The found-guilty plotter – who had been under house arrest in his residence while a series of court processes and challenges play out – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, during growing speculation that he will be transferred to a infamous maximum security facility.

Previous Statements on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the conservative ex- paratrooper showed minimal compassion for the country's inmates.

“Why should we offer these scoundrels a good life?” he once pondered. “They should just get messed, end of story. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to end up behind bars, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”

Jail Facility Discussion

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious bid to prevent the high court from banishing him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, claimed he predicted the 70-year-old politician to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute digestive issues – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 election race – signified it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is very grave. He won’t be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the quality of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That’s virtually one square meter per inmate.

“We conversed to the convicts and they protest, of course, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

Backers Speak Out

He is not the lone figure expressing views prior to the ex-leader's predicted detention.

Writing in a prominent publication, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the biggest political injustice in its past”.

“It represents an wrong that erodes the hearts of countless people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Varied Popular Reaction

That may be correct considering the significant support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. However his predicted imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of many individuals who feel he deserves to be jailed for plotting to prevent the incoming president from taking power – and even conspiring to have him murdered.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current leader's allied group, commented: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to obtain dignified care – but respectful care behind bars. He can’t carry on being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have long applauding the severe treatment of convicts, had suddenly become aware to their rights. “Only now has the far-right – which has repeatedly asserted that basic rights are not for offenders – chosen to tour a jail to discover what conditions are really like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning conduct”.

Possible Incarceration Facilities

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 detainees, his expected assigned facility looks to be a adjacent penitentiary for law enforcement and other “unique” detainees called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while living in the spectacular official residence, around a short distance away.

Based on information, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter veranda. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a set and also a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” sources indicated.

Partisan Reactions

The lawmaker criticized the rumoured idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his outcome in the {
