Israelis have assembled across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking representative familiar with the negotiations revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The representative stated the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, because of differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are striving to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Post-war management of the region

Public Feeling

In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home now and until every captive return no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to heal," she added.

Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israelis want the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, especially my little child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Medical Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area indicated additional victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south region, health workers said.

The territory's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
