British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
