American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy stated.
